Changing an Adult's Name
An adult may file a petition requesting a name change in the county which they reside. It should go without saying that a name change does not release you from any prior liabilities or deprive you of any preexisting rights that you had under your prior name.
Texas law mandates specific requirements to be included in a verified petition to change the name of an adult, such as
- person’s current name;
- full name requested;
- reason for change;
- whether petitioner has a final felony conviction;
- fingerprint card in acceptable format to the Department of Public Safety and Federal Bureau of Investigation;
- driver’s license number;
- sex and race;
- date of birth; and
- any offense above the grade of a Class C misdemeanor.
