An Overview of the Different Courts
For civil cases, such as, family law cases, Texas has fourteen intermediate appellate jurisdictions and one final court, which is the Texas Supreme Court.
Cases arising out of most Central Texas counties are appealed to the Third Court of Appeals in Austin. The 3rd Court was created in 1892 and consists of a Chief Justice and five justices. It hears cases from 24 counties: 1) Bastrop, 2) Bell, 3) Blanco, 4) Burnet, 5) Caldwell, 6) Coke, 7) Comal, 8) Concho, 9) Fayette, 10) Hays, 11) Irion, 12) Lampasas, 13) Lee, 14) Llano, 15) McCullloch, 16) Milam, 17) Mills, 18) Runnels, 19) San Saba, 20) Schleicher, 21) Sterling, 22) Tom Green, 23) Travis, and 24) Williamson.
