Racial Bias in Adoption

According to data compiled by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, in 2008 there were 6,375 Texas children waiting to be adopted.  Over two-thirds of all the children are Hispanic or Black.  In Lubbock County, the Hispanic population is 30 percent; however, of the 174 children awaiting adoptions, about half are of Hispanic origin.  The story further revealed that statewide a white child waits approximately 28.7 months to be adopted, while Hispanic children wait about 29.2 months and African-American chidlren wait 31.7 months.
